There has been a notable shift in permanent residence policies, with European countries placing increasing emphasis on integration requirements. This article focuses on monetary requirements by exploring how immigrants perceive the income requirement for permanent residence through 29 interviews conducted with a diverse group of immigrants in Norway. A striking finding in our material is that most interviewees view the income requirement as unjust or illegitimate, and rather than providing motivation, it instead adds an extra layer of concern. Additionally, the requirement fosters a sense of being less valued compared to the majority population and of being unwanted. Although most interviewees are against the income requirement, suggesting that class has no explanatory value for understanding the legal consciousness of the participants, we identified at least three distinct narratives within their opposition that appear to be class-based. Thus, we advocate for ‘bringing class back in’ to legal consciousness studies.

  • Involvement in nature-based activities is shown to increase health and wellbeing. However, some people with disabilities require assistive devices to be able to participate in such activities. By exploring the needs of persons with disabilities regarding assistive devices, this study aims to gain a better understanding of how accessible nature-based experiences for all can be supported. The article builds on a large-scale digital survey of the needs and experiences of persons with disabilities who were contacted through user organizations and a rehabilitation center in Norway. Most of the respondents reported that they brought their own assistive devices for activities of daily living, such as crutches, wheelchairs, hearing aids, or a white cane. However, they wanted to rent or lend assistive devices for sports and outdoor activities. Information about accessibility was reported to be very important but often lacking. To allow for more universally designed services and environments, nature-based travel destinations should aim to provide assistive devices for activities along with ordinary equipment, information about it on their websites, and competent staff to make nature-based experiences accessible for all.

  • ABSTRACT Tourism is a significant sector on the Svalbard archipelago. The increase in visitors and tourism activities has reshaped the local community of Longyearbyen, brought new economic opportunities, and put greater pressure on the local environment. Tourism operators address ways to integrate the concept of sustainability in their products, management, and communications, as well as focus on selected sustainable development goals (SDGs). Yet, many actors struggle to prioritize work with the SDGs. Through a case study of the tourism sector on Svalbard, this article offers a novel methodology to identify, assess, and hierarchize the most relevant SDGs at the target level. Based on qualitative data, we reviewed all 169 targets and identified 42 relevant targets for tourism in Svalbard. We filled a table to assess these targets and hierarchize them, taking into consideration the context in Svalbard and information we gathered from document analyses and interviews with local stakeholders. Our findings show that tourism operators on Svalbard play a decisive role in contributing to the three pillars of sustainability (economic, social, and environmental). However, better inclusion of targets with a strong social dimension in sustainability strategies will contribute to a successful operationalization of the SDG framework. We emphasize the importance of coordinating work between the tourism industry and local and national authorities to achieve the most complex SDG targets. Moreover, we encourage the tourism operators to identify relevant but underrepresented sustainability areas in their strategies to develop their own feasible contributions, while integrating the whole SDG framework into their development models.

  • This paper explores the challenges and key enablers of transdisciplinary research in the specific context of Svalbard, offering methodological perspectives and recommendations. The interconnected climatic and socioeconomic changes in Svalbard call for collaboration across disciplines, as well as societal stakeholders. Such integrative research collaboration is conceptualised as a transdisciplinary approach. This approach emphasises a need for continuous and holistic knowledge co-production and relevant data-sharing across sectors, ensuring a robust foundation for informed decision-making and development strategies. However, navigating transdisciplinarity can be complex, as research often aligns with traditional disciplinary structures. This paper emerged from a collaborative exchange on how to carry out transdisciplinary research in Svalbard, a process that proved productive for transdisciplinary knowledge production. It incorporates insights from two workshops where both researchers from diverse disciplines and non-academic stakeholders actively contributed to discussions and the development of this article. Acknowledging the dynamic nature of transdisciplinary research, we present the themes that emerged from our workshops, categorised as challenges, opportunities, and best practices. These themes are then discussed in light of the democratic and pragmatic principles that underpin transdisciplinary research. We conclude the study by offering recommendations aimed at fostering further co-creation across disciplines and stakeholders from a transdisciplinary perspective.
