About Nordland Research Institute

Nordland Research Institute (NRI), based in Northern Norway and locally owned, is dedicated to interdisciplinary social science research.

We lead a variety of national and international research projects in close collaboration with local communities, public authorities, businesses, and other research organisations. Our commitment is to produce relevant knowledge that benefits people, society, and policy.

Our research areas include:

  • Local communities and governance

  • Green transition and transformative action

  • Sustainability, natural resources and biodiversity loss

  • Welfare, health and upbringing

We are rooted in the Arctic and conduct research locally, regionally, and internationally. Established in 1979 in Bodø, Norway, Nordland Research Institute also operates Svolvær and Mo i Rana offices.

We help turn challenges into insight and ideas into action.

Whether you are a municipality addressing complex societal needs, a company navigating the green transition, or a public agency strengthening its preparedness, we deliver research-based support tailored to your needs.

As an Approved Research Organisation by the Research Council of Norway, we are eligible for public research funding, including funding not accessible to private companies. This makes us a strategic and reliable partner for innovation, applied research, and collaborative development.

We follow the ethical guidelines of the National Committee for Research Ethics in the Social Sciences and Humanities (NESH) and uphold academic freedom.

We offer:

  • Collaborative research and co-creation of knowledge

  • Strategic analysis and policy advice

  • Evaluation and impact assessments

  • Stakeholder engagement and participatory methods

  • Support for innovation and transformative processes
